The Old Souk Salmiya is located along Salem Al‑Mubarak Street in the district of Salmiya (in the Hawalli Governorate of Kuwait). It is part of one of Salmiya’s earlier commercial hubs and is described as a remnant of the older “souq” style shopping strip, mixing traditional and more modern elements. A notable revitalised section is called Barayeh Salem (sometimes the souq is referenced by this name) which underwent refurbishment around 2018 and serves as a commercial area with many shops and services. A mixture of retail outlets: gold and jewellery stores, fabric and clothing shops, general merchandise. Especially the “old souk” zone is noted for gold and fabric shops. A distinct cultural flavour: The area has become a gathering place for the Filipino community in Kuwait, earning the nickname “Little Manila”. You’ll find many Filipino-targeted restaurants, cafés, salons and shops. The vibe is more local, somewhat informal compared to big malls. It’s good for browsing smaller shops, discovering bargains, local food, and experiencing a different slice of Salmiya’s commerce. Since it’s a street/shopping-district rather than a single enclosed mall, hours vary by shop. Some sources list “always open” for the area but individual store hours will differ. Good to go later in the day when more shops are open and the area is more lively. If you’re interested in food & culture, explore the smaller back-streets and side alleys around the main strip for interesting cafés and local snacks. Wear comfortable shoes; parking might be tighter than larger malls. Bargaining may be possible in smaller shops, especially for non-fixed items such as fabrics or lesser-branded goods.
